Fetal weight estimation by three-dimensional ultrasonography
Keywords:
ultrasonography, prenatal, birth weight, fetal weightAbstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the fetal weight estimation as measured by three-dimensional ultrasonography compared to two-dimensional ultrasonography. A diagnostic clinical trial was performed with 49 pregnant women at the Pedro Ernesto University Hospital. The fetal weight was estimated by performing two and three-dimensional ultrasound examinations in pregnant women whose delivery had occurred up to 48 hours; then, the estimates were compared to the birth weight. The Shapiro-Wilk test was performed to evaluate the normal distribution of the data. The comparison of the different formulas for fetal weight estimation with birth weight as well as the comparison of the formulas with each other were done respectively through the Wilcoxon and Kruskal-Wallis tests. The results were: Wilcoxon: two-dimensional ultrasonography p-value=0.86; three-dimensional ultrasonography p-value=0.24; two-dimensional ultrasonography associated with three-dimensional ultrasonography p-value=0.10; Kruskal-Wallis: p-value=0.18. Intraobserver variability evaluation using only thigh fraction volume showed agreement of 90% and using two and three-dimensional parameters showed agreement of 96%. In interobserver variability, this agreement was 90 and 96%, respectively. It was concluded that there is no statistically significant difference between fetal weight estimation performed through two-dimensional or threedimensional ultrasonography in the studied population.
